Christmas Prayer

Christmas Prayer, 1882, Van Gogh

Saw the star
reside in me
petition to my heart,
rest child
the world at war
I give a silent night.

Thought to say
a prayer for you,
my heart to plead a cause,
treasure each day
as best you can
learn to take a pause.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

-Matthew 6:34

Van Gogh hoped to express the “special mood” of the holidays. “Just as much as an old man of that kind, I have a feeling of belief in something on high.”

–Van Gogh
